My first introduction to romance was being chased by boys who were trying to kiss us girls at recess in first grade. I ran like Hell…ugh what a disgusting thought. But he is cute. Then I fell and split my lip into a bloody mess and got in trouble for it. That’s why there’s so many songs about love.

Little did I know that day in first grade was a preview to my future. How to deal with all these crazy feelings? As a songwriter I write about many things but can’t help writing about love and relationships, and the accompanying joy, ecstasy, heartache, and mental anguish that we all experience at some point in our lives. Being in love is a total high, but when you fall for the wrong person it can make life really miserable. The sad thing is sometimes that’s the person we’re attracted to. Which is how I ended up dating a guy with a major drug problem in high school. He was the best person, but I made the decision not to go down that road with anyone else…especially after learning the hardest lesson…that love doesn’t always conquer all.

Do any of us really know what we’re doing? The whole love-mating thing is so deeply programmed in us over thousands of years. Call it animal attraction, survival of the fittest, or plain old chemistry. I have no idea why it’s better/sexier/hotter kissing one person over another. Chemistry is an enigma. Gay, straight, in cultures all over the world, we’re dealing with the same stuff.

And sometimes we’re never happy. It’s the old “grass is greener” syndrome. When you’re single you’re most likely looking for love, and when you’re in a relationship sometimes you wish you weren’t. Ugh, it’s so confusing being a human being.

I have no answers…let me know if you do. Guess I’ll go write another love song and hope we all end up lucky in love like Johnny Cash. And I’m still not going to answer all the people who’ve asked if “So Familiar” is about me…maybe, maybe not.
